With the Supreme Court sounding inclined to uphold a law banning TikTok in the U.S. that's set to go into effect Jan. 19, here's what that actually means for the app's users.

TikTok could be outlawed in the U.S. as soon as Jan. 19 over concerns about its Chinese ownership, unless it gets a reprieve from the Supreme Court or if Beijing-based parent company ByteDance complies with a federal law forcing it to sell its stake in the app.

As a possible ban on TikTok in the United States looms, several other Chinese-owned social media apps have gained popularity. Newsweek reached out to TikTok via its website for comment. TikTok will appear before the Supreme Court on Friday in a final attempt to prevent a national ban on the app.
