The Supreme Court on Monday turned back a push by the state of Utah to wrest control of vast areas of public land from the federal government, marking a small victory for land conservation advocates who worry that similar efforts may escalate in a Republican-controlled Washington.

“We’re grateful the Supreme Court swiftly rejected the State of Utah’s misguided land grab lawsuit,” Steve Bloch, legal director for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, said in a statement. “For more than 100 years, the Supreme Court has affirmed the power of the federal government to hold and manage public lands on behalf of all Americans.”

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a case that sought to block the U.S. Department of Justice from reopening a probe into the National Association of Realtors over the commissions brokers charge on home sales.

The US Supreme Court turned away an appeal by the National Association of Realtors, leaving intact a ruling that lets the Justice Department restart an antitrust probe into the organization’s policies.
