Alex Ovechkin scored an empty-net goal in his return to action as the Washington Capitals upended the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Saturday night.

TORONTO -- Alex Ovechkin scored in his return after missing the past 16 games with a broken leg for the Washington Capitals in a 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday. The Capitals went 10-5-1 without Ovechkin, who last played on Nov. 18.

The biggest storyline was Alex Ovechkin's return. The 39-year-old had the spotlight on him, and he had a strong showing in his first game back from a fractured left fibula. Ovechkin had three shots on goal and skated 14:20 minutes as Spencer Carbery eased him back into the mix.
