An historic January storm dumped more deep snow along the U.S. Gulf Coast on Wednesday after bringing Houston and New Orleans to a near standstill over the past two days and burying parts of Florida's Panhandle with accumulations more typical of Chicago.

The heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain hitting parts of the Deep South came as a blast of Arctic air plunged much of the Midwest and the eastern US into a deep freeze.

A brutal winter storm has crippled the southeast and left usually-warm residents under record-high amounts of snow.

Parts of northern Florida received inches of snow overnight as a strong winter front moved in. Many areas continue to deal with the impacts of an Arctic blast. Snow and ice have fallen in areas along I-10 near Tallahassee. People in Florida are among the millions in the South who are feeling the effects.

Parts of northern Florida are digging out Wednesday after being hit by the winter storm that's rolled through the southern U.S. this week. The storm is expected to move into Georgia and the Carolinas Wednesday.

Dangerous below-freezing temperatures with even colder wind chills were also expected to last over much of the week in the region. Authorities say three people have died in the cold weather.
